As runners, we often get caught up in the minutiae of training. Every day seems to bring a new “optimal” exercise or technique. The treadmill vs. road running debate is no exception, with purists arguing that “treadmills won’t prepare you for road races.”

For years, I would have told myself there’s no point in running on the treadmill; it’s raining all day, so I just won’t run. That seems silly now. It may not be the exact same, but it’s probably good enough for 95% of the benefits. That sounds worth it to me.

I logged 8 miles on the treadmill at an 8:11 pace with a heart rate of only 133! So, is a treadmill easier or harder? Better for your knees or worse? I’m sure there are studies comparing the two. I believe the answer largely depends on the individual. Whether it’s on a treadmill or the open road, any run is better than no run at all.
