A quick recap on last week’s workouts; lots of traveling and lots of running in the heat but managed to get in all 50 miles. I did not get any speed work or hill repeats in but overall I’m happy being consistent with mileage.
This week we really need to get in some speed though. Garmin keeps telling me every other day my 5k time is getting slower! I found some good mile-type workouts that I want to give a go. 6×600, with the first 100 being fast, settling in for the middle 400, and fast again for the last 100 – will report back if I survive.
Yesterday’s workout was really nice at first but ended kind of meh. I did 6 miles on the road around 7:30 pace, and for the first 3 of that my HR was in the 130s. Being the middle of the day and hot, I was pretty happy to see that – but the second half was all 150 plus. I ended the workout with an average of 146. Then I did another 4 on the treadmill later to get my 10 for the day. Kept it easy, running only 8 min pace, but HR was above 140 for most of it.
I wonder what impacts my HR that it can vary so much; diet, weight, time of day? This is something that needs more attention in my training if I plan on reaching my goal of sub 7:30 pace while maintaining a HR of 140 or less.
